General Handrail Questions

I want to fit a new handrail. Where do I measure from?

If it’s a banister rail replacement, just measure your existing one. If it’s a balustrade that you're after, please send us your design in the form of a dimensional sketch or drawing.

I want the banister to go on my left hand wall is this possible?

Yes, it can go on either wall depending which way round you put it. Just turn it around, lengthways.

How high should my POOL balustrade be?

In accordance with current Regulations they should be 1,200mm high.

How many tube infills do you offer ?

You, or architect, need to familiarise yourself with your local building code requirements as these may differ from area to area.

How high should my balustrade be?

In accordance with current Regulations they should be 1000mm high.

Are they straight?

Yes, all our handrails are straight. Forming to your required radius or spiral is done by specialized tube rollers.

What diameter is the handrail?

The tubes have outside diameters of 50.8mm.

What grades of stainless steel do you use?

We use commercial grades AISI 304 for internal applications and AISI 316 for external applications. You can mix depending upon the environment of your installation.

Do you have a step by step instruction?

YES, a complete assembly booklet and DVD. Available on request./p>

Are all your systems readymade?

YES, just assemble. No extra site work!

Handrail Finish

Do you have any other types of finish?

YES, all of our banister rails and stainless steel fittings are satin and mirror polished and Ti coated with colour options. We find it perfect for most environments where a contemporary, stylish handrail is require.

Wall Brackets, Joints, Clamps & End Caps

How long are your handrails?

The handrail is supplied from the tube mills in 6 metre lengths, but you / we can cut (or join) them to any required length.

How do I attach glass clamps, and brackets to the tube?

Please refer to the Assembly page of our website. Balustrade orders are supplied with completed uprights for glass systems, for your convenience.

How do I know how many brackets I require?

Our recommendation will depend on the length of wall handrail required. As a rough guide, we attach 3 brackets to 3-metre banisters and 4 brackets to banister hand rails up to 4-metres – but this can be changed to your individual requirements.

Installation & Maintenance

Do your rails comply with Building Regulation requirements?

YES, It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure compliance. If correctly assembled, and with suitable fixings and reinforcement where necessary, our handrail system satisfies the loading requirements for domestic and commercial use. For installations of commercial use, please ask for details.

Will you fit my order for me?

YES. Most installations can be facilitated quite easily using a few basic hand tools. However, we do have a team of preferred installers in your area - please ask for details. Most builders, joiners, plumbers, carpenters and pro-efficient DIY’ers should have no problem in installing.

Epoxy, how long does it take to set?

Under normal working conditions, Sika will start to cure in approx. 2 hours. This time can be significantly reduced in warmer environments. Joints should be a fully cured after 24 hours.

Safety?

All our balustrades have been tested and approved by the SABS and meets all the safety aspects set.

How strong are your systems?

How easy are your systems to assemble ?

Do I need accurate site measurements ?

NO, not necessary! A simple line drawing layout is all we require.

Can your system do any stairs?

YES, Our systems fit any stair and landing configurations you may require. Fits any stair configuration! Flexibility to respond to changing customer needs! We have clever fittings which allow you to adjust to any angle and configuration.

Can you make mistakes with your system ?

NO, it’s all in the design! There is very little too think about, No hassles, just assemble. It’s all in the design!

Suiteable fixing options for different types of sub- straights?

Concrete: Core drill, Post fix, Side fix. Wood: Thread fix, Wood fix, Steel: Side fix, Thread fix.

What’s the difference between straight and stairs sockets ?

Sockets, Straight is used for straight sections and stair is used for the stair sections.

Why use a centre post ?

Supports in-fills and top rail.

What makes up a balustrade kit?

Top rail, In-fills: Tube, Glass, Cable. Set of 50,8 end posts, start and end. 38 Centre posts, 5 x 15.8 Horizontal in fills. Post options: 90⁰ invert straight post/ invert stair post, 90⁰ true straight post / true stair post. 180⁰ straight post /stair post.

Do your handrails require welding? How difficult are they to install?

No, our handrails are totally weld-free and very easy to install. Our modular technology design requires no special fixings, All exposed joints are hidden from view. Most orders (handrails) are pre-prepared in our depot and require only site assembly. Balustrade systems constructed from 50,8 main posts, 38 centre posts, all upright posts are complete with core drill fixing, Post fix, Side fix, Thread fix and Wood fix options. (Where necessary) see attached. The upright posts will be supplied with complete ready to install posts for your convenience. Glass brackets, tension-wire fixings and tube rail brackets supplied complete for your convenience. Anyone with a basic knowledge of DIY or any builder should have no problem installing our handrails. All our systems are designed for the novice DIY’er.

Delivery & Collection

What is the lead time?

Dependent on the product option you have chosen, should you be in a hurry and cannot wait, then order the un-assembled kit systems.
Un-assembled Option: "Off the shelf" ,allow generally about 2 working days for order preparation for ex-stock items. Assembled factory Option: Generally factory lead times on order placement apply. Subject to scope of work.
Install Option: Generally factory lead times on order placement apply. Subject to scope of work.
Custom Made: Generally factory lead times on order placement apply. Subject to scope of work.

Other Materials

What size is the wire?

The standard rigging wire is 4mm diameter that we recommend for use on balustrades, but we supply any diameter specified.

How many wires do I need on my balustrade?

Please consult current Building Regulations. Currently, you should have no gap greater than 100mm. There are many alternative configurations available, depending on your application. Give us a call and we will be happy to talk you through your options.

Are the handrails suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. You should indicate your intended use when ordering. This will denote which grade of stainless steel is most suited to your application. Generally though > Indoor – AISI 304 Outdoor – AISI 316.

Yes, our ready- made handrail and balustrade systems are ideal for shop-fitting, construction, architectural designs, whether it be on a supply only or supply and fit contract. Please contact us to discuss your specification.

Infill Panels

Can I use Perspex as an alternative to glass?

Yes you can. You could also consider acrylic, perforated metal sheet, rigging wire cables, powder coated metal, stainless steel tube or bar, and mesh. specialist glass spider fixings.

What thickness of glass do I need?

You can choose from a range of thicknesses from 6mm up to 10mm for use with our standard balustrade glass clamps. Thicker structural glass should be mounting using either a base channel fixing method.

How many glass clamps do I need per sheet of glass?

We recommend a minimum of 4 glass clamps to every square metre of glass.

What is the longest sheet of glass I can use?

Refer to our glazing guild page 16.Recommend width of glass for outdoor use depending on wind factor, type; thickness will determine your spacing. Please make contact with our technical support office if in doubt. Please be advised that most glass suppliers don.

What kind of glass should I use?

We recommend using toughened or laminated safety glass.

Do you supply glass?

No, we only supply the stainless steel systems, to cut costs. But we work with several glass merchants. Very simple and straight forward to order!

Ordering

I purchased from one of your agents, who do I contact for further items?

I just want a banister rail and I know the length, can I get a fixed price?

Yes, you can buy a stainless steel banister handrail online.

My delivery hasn't arrived. What can I do?

All claims for loss or non-delivery must be advised in writing within 7 days of the advised despatch date. Please submit claims WITHOUT DELAY.

My delivery was damaged. What can I do?

Notify us immediately and we will arrange either a re-work or replacement. Remember to insure your goods!

When are you open?

We are open Monday – Thursday from 8 am – 4.30pm. Fridays from 8 am –14:00 pm.

How is it delivered?

We send out all orders on a next day carrier service.

When will I be charged?

If you are paying by credit card, you will be charged when the delivery paperwork is raised. If you are paying by EFT, we require payment before we start production.
