The various types of glass used in frameless balustrade systems
Heat Treated Glass
Heat Treated Glass, also known as tempered glass, its production process is to enhance mechanical strength without increasing thickness and weight of glass, to reach the capability of wind load resistance, shock resistance and thermal resistance. According to different manufacture process, it can be divided into tempered glass and heat strengthened glass.
Heat the glass to softening point through horizontal tempering furnace, and then do quick and even cooling process. It gets compression pressure on the surface, while the internal part generates tensile pressure, which effectively improve the impact strength and bending strength, 4-5 times as that of common glass. The broken toughened glass shows little even fragments without sharp edges, which greatly reduces its danger to human. It is the ideal safety glass in modern society.
Heat strengthened glass
It's production process is basically similar to tempered glass, slight lower strength than tempered glass, 1-2 times as that of common glass. Excellent performance in the wind load resistance and thermal resistance, better to avoid spontaneous breakage (self-explosion) than tempered glass, but less safety than tempered glass.
Tempered glass is a heat toughened safety glass. It has under gone a special heat treatment to increase its strength and resistance to impact. In fact, tempered glass is approximately five times more resistant than normal glass. And if broken, tempered glass breaks into small pieces so that it won't hurt people.
TEMPERED LAMINATED GLASS
Laminated glass comprises two or more sheets of glass bonded together with one or more interlayer's of polyvinyl butyric (PVB) film. After high temperature and pressure treatment, the glass and film is totally become one. If the laminated glass breaks, the fragments of glass are held in place by the interlayer(s).So tempered laminated glass is a double security solution.
